What is Activism?

Activism is the act of taking purposeful action to bring about positive social, political, or cultural change. It means standing up against injustice, advocating for those whose voices have been silenced, and working collectively to improve the conditions of our communities. At Destiny of H.O.P.E., activism is not just an idea—it is a commitment to engage, educate, and empower individuals to transform their lives and environments.

  • Returning citizens rebuilding their lives after incarceration.

  • Marginalized groups who face systemic barriers due to race, class, gender, or identity.

We believe that by lifting up those often overlooked, we create healthier, safer, and more connected communities for everyone.

What is the Coalition Against Community Violence (CACV) and Why is it Necessary?

The Coalition Against Community Violence (CACV) is a partnership of residents, youth advocates, community leaders, faith-based groups, educators, and public officials working together to address the root causes of violence in Columbia. It is necessary because:

  • Violence impacts not only individuals but entire neighborhoods, creating cycles of fear and instability.

  • Building trust between the community and institutions—especially law enforcement—requires ongoing dialogue and accountability.

  • Systemic change cannot be achieved by one organization alone; it requires collaboration across sectors to create real solutions.

Through CACV, we amplify community voices, develop strategies that address trauma and inequity, and build pathways to peace.

Why is it Important to Address Legislators?

Engaging with legislators is critical because many of the challenges we face—poverty, lack of affordable housing, barriers to reentry, youth services, and public safety—are directly tied to policies and funding decisions made at the city, state, and federal levels. By addressing legislators:

Why is it Important to Address Legislators?

Engaging with legislators is critical because many of the challenges we face—poverty, lack of affordable housing, barriers to reentry, youth services, and public safety—are directly tied to policies and funding decisions made at the city, state, and federal levels. By addressing legislators:

  • We ensure that the voices of our community are heard where decisions are made.

  • We advocate for laws and resources that strengthen families, reduce violence, and create opportunities for youth.

  • We hold policymakers accountable to the people they serve.

At Destiny of H.O.P.E., we believe activism is not complete without advocacy. Speaking truth to power is how we secure lasting change.
